Position Summary
The Business Development Manager supports the Chair of the Private
Equity group to drive the business development and marketing
efforts of the Chair's individual Private Equity ("PE") practice.
This will involve identifying, formulating and implementing
business development and marketing strategies that complement
similar initiatives across regions where the firm has a
presence.
This is a hands-on role and involves taking ownership of the
development of key credentials and leading on client pitch
opportunities. Communication is important in this role as the
Business Development Manager will lead engagement and
implementation efforts for strategic BD priorities and find
effective ways to raise the profile of the Chair's practice
internally and externally, working side-by-side with the Chair and
the full Practice and Project Management team that also supports
the Chair.The successful candidate will work largely autonomously
in terms of the day-to-day business of PE marketing and business
development but also collaboratively, as needed, with the business
development professionals supporting the practice groups, as well
as other industry groups, in other regions on
cross-selling/cross-sold projects, and again, works seamlessly with
the other support professionals on the Chair's team. A proactive
and enthusiastic approach with the ability to work with little
supervision is also key. The successful candidate should be a
confident and effective communicator, with the ability to offer
ideas draft clear and accurate pitch and BD materials.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Works seamlessly within the overall support team for the Chair,
leading the BD efforts and deliverables and helping to track all
Chair and client BD needs, within the Chair's practice
ecosystem.
Directly manages and develops the junior BD coordinators working in
the Chair's team, helping them grow their BD skills and application
of the skills, managing their performance, distributing work to
them, giving timely performance feedback, and creating a "team
within a team" of the BD function in order to ensure there is
high-level and consistent contribution being made by the BD group
within the Chair's constellation of support.
Develops a working knowledge of the Chair's practice and services,
market position, and develops a working knowledge of the overall PE
group at the firm as well as all practice groups and industry
groups with PE opportunities and cross-selling opportunities, as
well as an understanding of the Chair's existing key clients,
revenue priorities, ongoing projects, and prospective
clients/opportunities.
Assists Chair in identifying business development opportunities
with new and existing clients.
Conducts client / prospective client research and analysis using
library, knowledge management, and accounting resources; learns
firm's key client relationship and experience management
software/technology systems (currently Foundation and
Salesforce)
Develops practice related materials (PE profiles, experience lists,
case studies, etc.)
When needed, works with the Pitches and Proposals team to develop
RFPs, RFIs, and key proposals/presentations.
Works with other firm functions as needed, including:
Marketing/Business Development, Communications, Finance, Legal
Operations, IT and Administration.

Requirements
Education: . Bachelor's degree
Experience: The candidate will need to have good legal industry and
substantive BD knowledge including experience in a law firm
environment, and have good commercial understanding of the business
world and legal trends that impact firm clients. A minimum of
2years' experience in a marketing or business development position
involving extensive interaction with partners, with at least some
experience in a law firm. Experience of client-facing activity
preferable. Experience of working across borders is preferable
although not essential
Skills:
The candidate will need to be able to influence leadership and
partners, so they can quickly become a trusted advisor - acting as
internal consultant to partners on marketing and BD, inputting
ideas and providing advice
The candidate will be the direct manager for more junior BD
professionals and will need to demonstrate managerial acumen and
skills.
Able to demonstrate initiative where possible
Sensitivity to cultural differences and issues and the ability to
deal with a variety of personalities
This position will function as part of a collaborative and
energetic firmwide marketing and BD team of professionals around
the globe
Other
Supervisory Responsibilities: Will oversee more junior members of
the Business Development team.
Equipment To Be Used: Personal computer and other office equipment
such as telephone, calculator, copier, scanner, etc.

solutions-oriented thinking.
Must be able to travel for meetings and events as required.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Ability to utilize technology, including computers and
telecommunication devices. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office
is also essential.
Flexibility and adaptability; ability to multi-task, stay organised
and manage competing priorities
Ability to exercise sound judgment to recommend and effectuate
decisions.
Ability to use independent judgment and discretion and adapt to
changing work situations.
Ability to have a customer-focused mindset and deliver high-quality
service or solutions to internal or external stakeholders.
Must have Flexibility and adaptability to navigate changes,
unexpected challenges, and evolving priorities.
Must work in office as required.
Working Conditions: You will be required to work in the office at
minimum 3 days per week. Occasionally called upon to work hours in
excess of your normal daily schedule. The details of your weekly
schedule will be discussed further with your direct supervisor.
Pay Ranges:
This represents the presently-anticipated low and high end of Reed
Smith's pay range for this position. Actual pay may vary based on
various factors, including but not limited to location and
experience.
New York: $152,456 - $174,168
